As a young man thinking about my future and planning for college, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. However the promise of easy access into the rewarding Information Technology sector was too great to resist. I enrolled into an Associate's Program for Computer Science, turned on a computer for the first time in my first class and less than a year later I got my first job in the midst of the dot-com boom.
In nearly 15 years I grew from a Systems Operator to a Help Desk Technician and finally a Database Administrator. At times I did regret not choosing to become a teacher so I implemented what I could during my career. While I was earning my Associate's degree at Heald Institute of Technology-- I also worked there as a Teacher’s Assistant and Lab Tutor. In my Help Desk role, I preferred to teach my users fundamentals so as to empower them, and I would also proactively conduct training sessions which were well received and successful.
As satisfying and rewarding I found my career to be, I still yearned to teach. Though my career was rewarding it was not fulfilling on a higher level. I find myself wanting to help society by teaching students how to become the best people they can be. Teaching and the world of academia was seemingly a calling for me. So I made the very difficult decision to attempt a career change, and embrace the notion that it is never too late.
