"Hello! My name is Elise. I have Bachelor's degrees in Physics and Art, with a minor in Mathematics. I was a Teaching Assistant for college-level math, chemistry, and physics courses for three years, both assisting in the classroom and running study sessions. These study sessions were open to students in any math course on campus, so I regularly moved between teaching algebra, calculus, and differential equations in a session. I also have two years of experience as a math tutor for students ages 12-18, and I have taught computer science to students aged 10-22 in classrooms, independent study, and extracurricular settings for six years.

When I teach, I give students the tools to become independent learners and help them build conceptual understanding, so that they can apply their knowledge in new contexts. I believe that the best tutors teach their students not only the course material, but also how to learn. If I do my job well, my students will eventually no longer need me. I have worked with many students who have fear and anxiety around math, so I create an encouraging atmosphere where I reward persistence instead of punishing failure. Every student thinks differently, so I always adapt to the student's perspective when I explain new concepts.

I graduated from college Magna cum Laude with a GPA of 3.8, and was a recipient of a National Merit Scholarship, the Dean's Academic Scholarship, the David Bishop Merit Physics Award, and the Sprunger Art Scholarship. My focus is tutoring math and science, but I am also comfortable tutoring English and writing up to a high school level. I achieved a score of 4 on the AP English Literature test and scored a 36 on the Reading portion of the ACT, for a composite score of 35.
