"Hi! I'm Austin. I graduated in 2022 with bachelor's degrees in chemistry and geology from the University of Texas at Austin, maintaining a GPA of 3.77 during my studies. I'm currently enrolled in a Master's program in geology at the University of Maryland, College Park, with an estimated graduation date of May 2026.

During my undergraduate junior year, I acted as a teaching assistant for UT's 300-person General Chemistry course - this entailed going to several classes a week and tutoring many students at once in a classroom setting, as well as tutoring one-on-one and prepping outside of class. I tried my best to teach the subject how I wish I'd been taught when I took the same class my freshman year: instead of slowly and unproductively feeding the answer to students, I preferred to talk my way through problems. Often, the issue wasn't with comprehension, but with recall of phrases and equations, and once students were able to talk through problems without the stress of remembering these, concepts gradually fell into place (thereby reinforcing the words and formulae).

This is the philosophy I want to carry into tutoring sessions: constructive discussion of problems without the answer being locked behind an easily memorizable concept. I care about the subjects I teach and only want to teach them if I can impart a level of deeper understanding that will be reflected both in the student's confidence and grades.

I'm proficient in science and mathematics, and also have abundant experience with reading and writing. Although it's been nearly 10 years since I took my SAT and ACT, I received 98th percentile results in both and am available for test tutoring as well.
