"Hi, I'm Phillip. I have a bachelor's in math from UC Berkeley, and have passed multiple junior level computer science, physics, and statistics courses as well. I have always loved math and it's applications. I have also always loved tutoring, especially in STEM subjects. There is always a fresh perspective to discover, in addition to a formulaic approach to every problem. I use lecture style tutoring if necessary, but mostly practice problems and discussion style as well as the socratic method to teach students. I am encouraging with students and realistic with goals.
I have a year of tutoring experience in almost all subjects and all levels in the k-12 range in a tutoring center environment. I worked 1-on-1 with students and did group tutoring of up to 6. There was no "typical" student I worked with, as the students ranged from struggling to competitive. I gave these students homework help, as well as comprehension tests, explanations, and extra practice problems.
I also have a lot of experience as a private tutor. Typically, the students I have worked with in this setting are in high school or college, and at precalculus to linear algebra in math. In computer science, they are at an introductory level to the proof based algorithms and data structures level, and are working in Python, Java, or LaTeX. Each student is different. Some are really struggling with a tough assignment. Others need help reviewing for a test. Others are completely lost. They may just need a different explanation than the one given by their professor, or they may need help for the entire course to fill in gaps in their knowledge and stay afloat.
The most rewarding part about tutoring is seeing the light bulb moment when they finally get it and know that their subject won't cause them anxiety anymore. One of my favorite professors always said, "A teacher's job is to become obsolete." less...
