"Hi, I’m Dane! "Hi, I’m Dane! I've been tutoring in university-level statistics and calculus for about 5 years—I love making math "click" for high-schoolers and early college students figuring out their career goals. I try to make my lessons more of a conversation than a lecture: Doing math can be overwhelming even if you like it, and I sometimes wish my own introduction to certain topics had been more tailored.
I believe the most important skill in a STEM class is knowing all of your precise definitions, followed by carefully applying the definitions to problems. Many students find it helpful when I provide a flowchart or formula sheet, tailored to their class, to get all the concepts in one place.
Some background: I grew up near Folsom, CA and completed my community college district's math curriculum with a 4.0 GPA before finishing high school. I earned a B.S. in Mathematics of Computation, with a Philosophy minor, from UCLA in 2024. I've also conducted independent, full-time research at institutions across the U.S., with experience in topics including optimization, image processing, vector calculus, combinatorics, and graph theory, and I have authored 3 preprints and presented at conferences in 5 U.S. states. In addition to calc and stats, I tutor in discrete structures, physics, propositional logic, and writing (message me!).
I received a score of 1530 on the SAT and a perfect score of 800 on the (now-discontinued) SAT level-2 mathematics subject test, and I am happy to help high school students with test prep if desired! I've also successfully prepared students for AP tests and entrance examinations.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile! If it resonates with you or you have any inquiries (either for you or your child), please do reach out. My rates are negotiable, but I generally request $60/hr for online lessons with a higher rate for in-person. Hope to hear from you!" less...
