"Hello! My name is Makenna B. and I recently graduated magna cum laude from UCLA where I earned a Bachelor of Science in ecology. Throughout both high school and college, I supported myself through tutoring, a job which I find genuinely rewarding. In the past nine years I have had over 30 students, most of whom I tutored in math and biology. Of course each student is different both in learning style and personality, and I have enjoyed getting to know and becoming invested in each person I’ve had the opportunity to tutor. I've tutored in a variety of classes, including pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Math Analysis/Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, calculus, biology at middle and high school levels, and have also helped my students edit papers they have for other classes.

My general strategy for my lessons, whether the student is in elementary school or calculus, is to continually get feedback from the student (or their parents) for what is most helpful for them. In some cases, this is developing lesson plans and practice questions to re-teach what they learned in class. In others, students prefer simply to go over the notes they took in class and review questions from their home- or classwork. Regardless, of the best approach for a student, I make sure to constantly assess how well a particular concept is understood. My goal as a tutor is not just for the student to get a passing grade, but to truly understand the concepts and to be able to apply them in a variety of problem types. It is far easier to superficially understand a concept and be able to use it in a specific type of problem than to thoroughly understand the concept and be able to build on it in the next chapter. In order to reach this higher level of understanding, I teach a concept multiple ways, often utilizing drawings or other visuals in order to create a memorable lesson, and often ask students to explain to me why they decided to approach a problem in the way that they did.
