"Hey, I'm Sunny! Math has always been one of my strongest and favorite subjects, and I carried that enthusiasm into UCLA as a computer science major. I earned a 1560 SAT score (800 Math) and 5s on multiple AP exams, including Calculus BC and Statistics, and these experiences gave me a deep understanding of the high school math sequence as well as the exam strategies. At UCLA, I continue to use this math foundation every day in my coursework, which keeps topics like algebra, trigonometry, and calculus fresh.
I've had numerous teaching and tutoring experiences over the last few years. In high school, I was a top peer tutor (100+ hours) in math and physics, and I eventually became the manager of the school's program. I volunteered at a nonprofit called Robotics For All (50+ hours), where I led STEM classes for younger students, and I've continued doing paid tutoring in math over the last couple years. Currently, I am a Learning Assistant for UCLA lower-division computer science courses. I answer questions, lead discussions, and go through worksheets. All of this experience has taught me how to support students with different backgrounds and confidence levels.
My tutoring approach is structured but flexible. I start by identifying a student’s goals and current comfort level, then break problems into clear, manageable steps and explain the “why” behind each technique so that students build real intuition rather than just memorizing procedures. I encourage students to think out loud, ask questions freely, and try multiple approaches so we can address misconceptions early. For test prep, I incorporate timed practice, error analysis, and targeted review of weak areas, with the goal of helping students feel confident, independent, and genuinely prepared for their classes and exams." less...
