"Hi! I'm Oscar and I am an alumnus from Yale University, having graduated with a Bachelor of Science and majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. For about 7 years I have tutored students aged 10-15 in a one on one style, both in an online setting (especially during the pandemic) and in-person setting at the student's own residence. I have tutored in both science (including biology and chemistry) and math (including elementary math, prealgebra, and geometry).

In terms of tutoring style, I am pretty flexible and usually personalize it according to the student's preferences and learning styles. For visual learners, I try my best to implement tools such as videos (from educational websites), diagrams/models, or drawings (.e.g. via the Notability whiteboard function on my iPad). For kinesthetic learners I usually come up with interactive exercises or experiments that allows for them to have practical experience and have more immersion with the material they are learning. For math I try to emphasize to my students that there are different ways of solving a problem. I then try to find one that makes them comfortable and is easier for them, and I let them ultimately decide. For science, due to the technicality and complexity of the topics included under that umbrella, I try my best to show my own passion about science. I convey my own experiences as a pre-med student and talk about stories where I saw science in action, where biology and chemistry came to life to both negatively and positively affect someone's health. Seeing how much it actually did matter and hearing real-life examples actually helped my students think that science was cool and helped them to engage more with the material.

At the end of the day, I believe very strongly in being patient and understanding with the student so that they themselves can feel more secure and confident in themselves and their ability to learn/apply that knowledge. Seeing them be independent and empowered is what puts a smile on my face." less...
