"Hello, I’m Sophia!

I graduated summa cum laude from the College of William in Mary with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. I am a licensed K-5 teacher in Virginia, and after completing the master’s program in ESL and bilingual education this upcoming spring, I hope to have my own classroom! In my four years with the School of Education, I have taken many courses with passionate professors to learn effective and engaging teaching strategies including math, science, social studies, and literacy planning, instruction, and assessment and classroom management.

I am grateful to have had the enriching opportunity to student-teach at two elementary schools in Williamsburg, Virginia. I assisted and taught small groups in first and fourth grade for one year before full-time student teaching in a kindergarten classroom my senior year of undergrad. With a veteran teacher, I co-planned and implemented a variety of lessons to support our students in growing both academically and emotionally. At these schools, I gained experience with current reading teaching strategies, including UFLI and Benchmark. I practiced planning lessons, finding creative methods of introducing new concepts, implementing plans, conducting casual and formal assessments, and responding to each student’s needs based on what they understand and what they may need extra assistance with. Every student is different and unique learning preferences, and I am excited to continue learning how to meet each child where they are and help them reach their fullest potential!
