"I graduated with a bachelor's degree in English Education and a minor in Spanish. Although I’ve only taught my own full classroom for one year, I’ve been in various teaching roles over the past 4 years. I tutored at my university’s writing center (both digitally and in-person) for a year and a half. I’ve been an in-class assistant (intern) teacher in the U.S. and in Puebla, México, and I’ve tutored family and friends over the years.
I take a student-centered and culturally responsive approach to teaching. I understand that both the cultural backgrounds of my students and their individual decisions shape them into who they are today. I prefer teaching grades 7-12, but I can also teach adults. I prefer to tutor essay writing and creative writing. I also don’t mind tutoring test prep. I have never taken the SAT, but I got a 35 on the ACT back in high school using strategies that I can teach students here. I prefer to tutor digitally (not in-person), but I’ll do my best to make sure that the digital classroom is a safe space for students of all genders, races, ethnicities, and ability levels.
I help students understand the content I teach by connecting my lessons to their interests. For example, my senior thesis was about teaching setting and character (worldbuilding) through bringing videogame design concepts to a high school Creative Writing classroom. What motivated me most as a kid was realizing I couldn’t beat Mega Man: Battle Network without a higher reading level, but I understand that many of my students might be more interested in art, music, or sports than in role-playing games. When I taught English in my own classroom, I used dance, props, and theater techniques to help students visualize settings in their dramatic reading of A Christmas Carol. I used humor to teach compound and complex sentences. I had students explore theme and character by making them organize Powerpoint slides to look like each character’s personal Spotify playlists." less...
