"Hi!
I'm Tate. I graduated magna cum laude with a BA in English, and I am now a master's student in English. As part of my graduate studies, I work as a writing tutor for undergraduates and varsity athletes. Dating back to high school, I have worked and volunteered as a tutor in numerous capacities: as a reading instructor for elementary school students, as a private writing tutor for high school students, and as a remote tutor for college students.
When I decided to major in English as an undergraduate, I did so with the knowledge that I would eventually become a tutor and a teacher. Discussing literature and the craft of writing has always been a place where I have felt 'at home', and it is my primary goal as a tutor to help students share in that experience. The writing process is full of uncertainty, confusion, and, sometimes, a sense of being lost. These are all natural consequences of writing – they happen to everyone – but that doesn’t make them less daunting. In my work with students, I prioritize communication and repeatable practices as ways of navigating the obstacles we encounter. By focusing our attention on the process of writing, we will cultivate the analytical and creative faculties necessary for the expression of sophisticated ideas. As our work advances, I am confident the student will feel increasingly comfortable – perhaps even 'at home' – in that space of uncertainty and possibility in which writing comes to life.
If you are interested in working with me, please reach out! I specialize in English, but I am happy to help with any kind of writing (or reading) in the humanities." less...
