Lewis Thomas (1913 – 1993) – US physician, writer, biologist, educator and researcher. He wrote “The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher” (1974) and won a National Book Award and a Christopher Award for this book. He worked as Dean of Yale Medical School and the New York University School of Medicine, and President of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Institute. His formative years as an independent medical researcher were at Tulane University School of Medicine.
